Bud Grace has ended his syndicated comic strip Piranha Club after thirty years. How it lasted that long is a puzzler. Like all good comic strips, it was character-driven.
November closed out with another of those weeks not quite busy enough to justify splitting into two. I blame Friday and Saturday. Nothing mathematically-themed was happening them.
It was originally called "Ernie", but the title was changed to the current one in The strip made its debut in February It also houses an actual piranha named Earl who serves as the club's mascot and trash compactor. Originally, Ernie was portrayed as something of a loser, but he gradually evolved into a more "normal" person.

Ernie was truly hilarious and deserves a place among the finest strips ever created. I was surprised to learn it hadn't caught on, though the golden age of comic strips had passed by the time Ernie reached its pinnacle and it wasn't fully appreciated as it would have been five or ten years earlier. There was one other book collection from the early years called "Trust Me", which has strips from the first year or two.
